Abstract

The probability of a large-magnitude earthquake occurring in Padang City in the future is categorized as high. This is due to the city’s proximity to an active subduction zone. Such an event would likely result in significant casualties and extensive structural damage. Knowledge and awareness of this hazard play a crucial role in shaping attitudes and actions toward disaster preparedness. In this study, an assessment was conducted to evaluate the level of awareness and knowledge of the Padang City community regarding earthquake disaster mitigation. Frequency analysis was performed for each response based on the defined indicators. A total of 348 respondents were included in this assessment. Regarding the level of public awareness of earthquake mitigation, which is represented by two sub-indicators, it can be concluded that the community demonstrates awareness of proper housing conditions for earthquake mitigation. However, in terms of the preparedness sub-indicator, the community has not yet fully developed adequate awareness of preparedness measures for earthquake mitigation. In terms of knowledge, the level of public understanding of earthquake mitigation measured through sub-indicators such as knowledge of mitigation practices, dissemination of preparedness information, and disaster management can be considered good. This is evidenced by the majority of respondents demonstrating sufficient knowledge of earthquake disaster mitigation.
